Day 4-6: Viñales

The first day on the road in your classic car will take you out of Havana and down the Autopista A4 to Viñales. Here you’ll find a landscape of verdant tobacco fields bordered by towering limestone escarpments and interspersed with giant outcrops of rock called mogotes.

Aside from being situated amidst some of the most spectacular and unusual scenery in Cuba, the Viñales Valley also happens to be at the heart of Cuba’s prime tobacco-growing region, the Pinar del Rio. While you’re here don’t miss the opportunity to hike, bike or ride through the area and visit a genuine tobacco farm along to way to witness the production process up-close.

Day 6-7: Las Terrazas

Las Terrazas is Cuba’s first eco-village, built almost in the style of a ‘mini-city’, with plenty of facilities considering its relatively small size. In the centre of the village is the Hotel La Moka resort, with cafes, restaurants and shops centred around it. This location is also surrounded by some amazing countryside. You will find the only canopy tour in Cuba here and any water-sports enthusiasts among you will enjoy the kayaking opportunities that the lake provides. Finally, Las Terrazas is also renowned for its community of artists. Many musicians, painters, potters and carpenters all live and work in the village.

Day 7-8: Cienfuegos

Nestled in a bay on Cuba’s southern coast, Cienfuegos will surprise you with its uniquely French architectural charm (the city was first settled by French immigrants in the 1810s). The sugar barons’ villas take centre stage, reminding you of the city’s importance as the historic centre of the nation’s sugar industry. Happily, although the historic old-town has World Heritage Site status, Cienfuegos has been largely unaffected by tourism.

Stroll through Martí Park on a guided tour and you will get to see an ensemble of the town’s most impressive buildings – Thomaserry Theatre and the Cathedral to name but two. There is also the opportunity to go on a catamaran excursion from the city’s port, allowing you to explore the surrounding countryside and small islands by sea.

Day 8-11: Trinidad

Next, you will be heading a short distance to the south east to the colonial city of Trinidad, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. With its cobblestone streets and colourfully painted houses, you get the feeling that time has stood still here. The city is always full of things to see and do, whether that’s museums, city-tours and excursions to the surrounding countryside by day; or restaurants, bars and live music events in the evening.

The surrounding area has various destinations which are ideal for a day trip, such as the beach at Playa Ancó, the Valley of Sugar Mills and the Topes de Collantes National Park, a World Heritage Site that lends itself perfectly to walking and horse riding.

Day 11-14: Cayo Santa María

Towards the end of your holiday, you can leave all your troubles behind as you head north to spend a few blissful days on the beach at an all-inclusive resort on Cayo Santa María. Much of the island is designated as a nature reserve thanks to the richness of its habitats, both on and off-shore. The waters in the area boast a brilliant variety of marine life which you can see with a snorkeling or diving trip, while the beauty of its white, sandy beaches has led Cayo Santa María to be known as the “White Rose” of the Jardines del Rey. Four days here will round off your holiday in style, before we arrange for a private transfer to take you north again for one last night in Havana.

Would you like to experience Cuba?

cuban classic cars

Nothing in Cuba is as symbolic as the classic cars that roam the streets of Havana. The reason why you can practically only find classic cars here is because Fidel Castro banned free trade with the US in 1959 during the revolution. You’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time when you ride through Cuba’s capital city in a 70-year-old vehicle. Various collectibles from Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and Chrysler to Ford are just waiting to be admired.
